Many of our visitors split their fishing trips up into two one week sessions, with one week of fresh water fishing at Monument Bay and surrounding areas and one week of salt water fishing in the greater Hudson Bay area where we also run a charter offering mostly saltwater fly fishing. Saltwater fly fishing refers to fishing done along the coastlines and in oceans. When you go saltwater fly fishing you will be able to haul much larger fish than those found in freshwater like the tuna, mackerel, tarpon, sea trout and many other species. The equipment for saltwater fly fishing is also different than that of freshwater. You can indulge in this sport either on the coast, close to Hudson Bay, or venture out into the deep sea with a boat or even wade.
However, while wading you need to keep a lookout for stingrays that can sabotage all your plans for a leisurely fly fishing experience. You can also use the waders that have been made with the purpose of foiling the attempts of the stingray. Nevertheless here are a few tips for you to help you embark on your saltwater fly fishing journey.
Getting Your Fly Fishing Gear
For saltwater fly fishing you need to have heavy fishing gear like the rod, line and the reel because the wind in the oceans is stronger and you need extra weight to go against it. You should opt for those rods that are eight and a half feet to 9 feet long. The ideal weight of the line is seven, eight or nine. Fishing gear is not cheap. So you need to know what your requirements are. There are some fly fishers who opt for longer rods when they need to cast at a distance and shorter ones for more compact work. Choosing the appropriate reel is also essential as you need to keep a control on the reel depending on the fish size.
When choosing the line many prefer lines which are bright in color so that they are easily noticeable and while some prefer a mixture so that the fish do not move away. The Movement Of The WaterYour saltwater fly fishing results varies on the tidal currents which monitor the availability of the fish. During the tidal proceedings it brings in a lot of aquatic creatures to the surface. You should also have some information about the time and the force of these tides which can help you to garner in a rich haul.
Ideal Water Temperature
During cold conditions the fish are reluctant to move and in hot conditions they move to cooler areas. So remember to choose the water that is moderate in temperatureThe Fly PatternsThe saltwater fish feed on different types of food. You can use patterns like baitfish, crabs and shrimps. You can also use variations of crabs such as those made of yarn, coated foam or feathers. You can also use another popular method called ‘poppers’. These are surface lures meant to attract large saltwater fish. You can also catch the smaller species of fish like the striped bass or bonefish on the shore and use it as baits for luring your larger saltwater trophies.
